The Story

The morning behind the photograph

Some mornings ask you to be patient. This one asked for three. I had been returning to the same fold of the glen before dawn, hoping the mist would lift at exactly the moment the light arrived — and that she would still be there when it did.

On the third morning she was. A fox — the one I had come to know as Maida — utterly still, watching me as closely as I was watching her. For perhaps four seconds the whole glen held its breath. Then she was gone.

As a psychotherapist, I spend my days paying close attention to what is unspoken. Wildlife photography asks the same of me — to be quiet, to wait, and to notice. This image is what that attention looks like.

“To photograph an animal well, you first have to disappear. The picture is what is left when you do.”

The Framer

Made by hand in Scotland

Every print is entrusted to [Framer’s name], a family framing studio in [town], Scotland, where each frame is cut, joined and finished by hand.

Choosing the right frame is part of the work — the proportions of the mount, the depth of the moulding, the warmth of the glazing. It is the difference between a photograph and an object you live with for decades.
